The IELTS test is one of the mandatory admission requirements for those looking to get an education abroad. Most foreign universities accept IELTS as a proof of effective English language skills possessed by non-native speakers.
Often, the writing section of IELTS test seems to give sleepless nights to many studies abroad aspirants who are on the verge of taking the exam for the first time. However, even the students who try to re-attempt the test find the writing section quite challenging. However, if you can practice well and follow some common guidelines while taking up the IELTS writing test, you can, perhaps, save yourself from unnecessary worries.

Do’s in IELTS writing test
- You must analyze the graphs, charts, diagrams before planning to write the introduction, and use correct words where necessary. Do spend adequate time understanding the questions. Never rush to answer any questions without reading or understanding them properly
- In the academic writing task 1, you must paraphrase while introducing the graphs and charts.
- You must write an overview for task 1, and a conclusion (summary of all points discussed) for task 2.
- In the writing task 2, you must spend some time thinking, planning, and organizing what to write in your essay.
- It’s always advisable to break down your essay (writing task 2) into three main parts: introduction, body, and conclusion.
- Do stick to one idea while writing. Though it is quite natural to have a different perspective on the topic given by IELTS, but the examiner might get drifted and find it difficult to understand the precise meaning you are trying to portray. Don’t jump from one idea to another.
- Avoid expressions that sound memorized and often overused, which are termed as hackneyed phrases. Also, using words like ‘controversial or highly debated topic’ may not sound appropriate as most of the writing task 2 questions are non-controversial and not everybody finds it debatable. Also, avoid the use of idioms, rather break them into simple words and convey the precise meaning.
- Always try to use simple words and phrases. Often, test takers attempt to write complex sentences/words and fail to explain or convey the appropriate meaning. if it can be broken down to simpler words and phrases then avoid complex words.
- The conclusion must be as simple as possible. You must summarize your answer in the concluding paragraph and avoid using words like “above” and “below” and it should not be too long.
- Be careful of spellings, punctuations, and grammar that you choose to use.
- Pay attention to every detail you write on your answer paper.
- Do have a thorough check on your writing multiple times and look for errors with keen eyes.
DON’Ts in IELTS writing test
- Don’t panic and let anxiety overtake you.
- IELTS writing task requires you to use formal language. Avoid using emotive languages such as filthy, cruel, slash, ugly, etc.
- Don’t write too many words and do not write below the required word count – follow the limit
- Don’t focus too much on task 1 rather focus on task 2 and finish it in time.
- Don’t copy words and phrases from the question in your answer paper. You must paraphrase and use synonyms instead. You will be penalized if you copy words from the question.
- Do not write irrelevant topics or go off-topic
- You must not use contractions or abbreviations – words that you commonly use with your friends.
- Do not use slangs or informal language that you pick up from somebody or any colloquial words that you normally use while talking - should be avoided in the IELTS writing tasks.
- Though it’s good to do proper time management while writing, looking at the clock continually will not help.
