Listening
(Duration – 60 to 80 minutes)
The
Listening test assesses the candidate's ability to understand spoken English in
typical interactions in an academic environment. The Listening section
comprises questions about academic lectures and longer conversations in which
the speech sounds very natural. The candidate may take notes onany audio
material throughout the entire test. The Listening section has 2 components.
There will be 4 to 6 lectures, each of 3 to 5 minutes long, 6 questions per
lecture, 60 to 90 minutes. The later part will have 2 to 3 conversations, each
of 3 minutes long, 5 questions per conversation, & will take about 60 to 90
minutes
Speaking (Duration – 20 minutes)
The Speaking test assesses a candidate's ability to converse in English. The Speaking section is approximately 20 minutes long and includes 6 questions.
The first 2 questions are called "independent Speaking tasks" as they require, the candidate to draw entirely on his/her own ideas, opinions and experiences when s/he responds.
The other 4 questions are called "integrated Speaking tasks" because they need the candidate to integrate his/her English-language skills — listening and speaking or listening, reading and speaking — just as it happens in a classroom.
The
candidate will speak into the microphone on the headset and the responses will
be recorded and sent to ETS, where they will be scored by certified human
raters.
Writing (Duration – 50 minutes)
The Writing test assesses a candidate's ability to express himself through written text. The total time for the Writing section is 50 minutes. You are asked to write responses to 2 writing tasks: an integrated Writing task and an independent Writing task.
In the Integrated Writing task (20 minutes), the candidate will read a short passage and listen to a short lecture. Then s/he will write in response to what s/he read and listened to.
In the Independent
Task (30 minutes), the candidate will write an essay in response to a Writing
topic.
The TOEFL
test assesses your abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking – in
approximately four & half hours.

Q. When should I register for TOEFL?
A. Ideally, you should register 3 to 4 months before the test date & start preparing for the test at least 8 to 10 weeks prior to your test date.
Q. How long is the test session?
A. The entire TOEFL test session (including check-in time of 30 minutes) is approximately 4½ hours. The test alone is for 4 hours. Can notes be taken during the test?
One can take notes throughout the entire test, using the paper provided by the test administrator. However, at the end of the test,note / paper is collected and destroyed at the test center, to ensure test security.
Will I be required to wear headphones for the test? Yes. All the candidates will be given noise-canceling headphones with a microphone that the candidate will speak into for the Speaking section of the test.
Q. Do score recipients accept TOEFL scores from previous tests?
A. It may vary as per the policy of recipients hence, it is advisable to check with the recipients directly. However, the counsellors at ACHIVIA may also be able to advise in these cases.
